Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise when she was a little girl. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her time in Selma and decided to make the documentary of King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism when she was just a young student. She began her career as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the garbage of one of members of the juries. She was disappointed by her journalistic duties and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay started her career as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from college. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has launched lifestyle networks and promotions, like the Urban Beauty Collective.
